I made a sponge cake today. Marty's like, "Frances, is this a cake?" and I'm like, "Yes, and you should have some. Or not, whatever." Ten seconds later he's like, "Fran-ces, I can't cut this ca-ake. The filling is coming out." And I'm like, "Well, duh, Marty, of course it is. You're holding the knife horizontally instead of vertically."
So that is an entirely innocuous and everyday little thing. But I've been thinking - nobody ever told me how to cut a sponge cake. I can't specifically remember learning from watching someone, or through trial and error, but it had to be one of the two. Would Marty have worked it out if I hadn't been there? More likely I think he would have given up, not being very focused on presentation.
I don't know. A couple of years ago I read this book called Why Men Don't Iron: The Fascinating and Unalterable Differences Between Men and Women and gave up halfway through. (Because men are at a biological disadvantaged when it comes to working the fucking washing machine. Of course.) The sponge cake thing isn't the only example of things I wonder if I have innate knowledge of, but I don't think it has anything to do with my gender and it's not all homemaking-type things. I don't know, I have no idea where I'm going with this.
